Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
Traditional psychotherapy addresses the cognitive and emotional elements of trauma, but lacks techniques that work directly with the physiological elements, despite the fact that trauma profoundly affects the body and many symptoms of traumatized individuals are somatically driven.Sensorimotor psychotherapy is a body-oriented talking therapy that integrates verbal techniques with body-centered interventions in the treatment of trauma, attachment, and developmental issues. Since the re-living of trauma often occurs in the form of physical sensations, followed by intense trauma-related emotions of terror and helplessness, PTSD survivors learn how to manage and uncouple physical sensations from trauma-based emotions.
Simple body-oriented interventions track, name, and safely explore trauma-related somatic activation. This method helps heal disrupted somatic patterns, disturbed cognitive and emotional processing, and the fragmented sense of self experienced by so many traumatized individuals. People are able to stop feeling numb and disconnected from their bodies, their physical patterns, and their psychological issues.
